DES MOINES, Iowa – Park University split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Grand View University Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, taking down Missouri Valley College in five sets before falling to Evangel University, 3-0.
Ashley Reinert had a career-high 20 digs in Friday's 3-2 win over Missouri Valley.
Park (1-1) will continue tournament play Saturday in Des Moines, taking on tournament-host Grand View at noon, followed by a match with College of Saint Mary at 4 p.m.
Mariana Vogado and Ashley Reinert each had career-high totals in Park’s 3-2 win over Missouri Valley, with Vogado registering 17 kills and Reinert posting 20 digs.
Gabriela Garcia also helped the team to a season-opening win with nine kills and nine digs, while Crystal Cole set the offense in the opener with 40 assists. Kristin Beck also aided the Pirate defense, picking up 10 digs.
Park had to battle to beat Missouri Valley, defeating the Vikings in five sets after falling behind early in the match. The Vikings took the opening set in the match, 25-15, but Park fired back to take a 2-1 lead, winning the second and third sets 25-20, 25-18.
Missouri Valley managed to force a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-19, but the Pirates scratched out a close win in the decisive frame, beating the Vikings 15-12.
Friday’s five-set victory over Missouri Valley marked the first for the Pirates in five since Sept. 4, 2009, when Park defeated Bethany College 3-2 in Point Lookout, Mo. Park was 1-2 in five-set matches during the 2009 season.
Park went on to split its pair of matches on the opening day of the event in Des Moines, falling to Evangel University, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-19), in the day's second match.
