| While goal keeper Monika Stoiber is covering the goal in 2009, Pirate fans can help Kansas City's less fortunate cover up by bringing a new or gently used blanket to the gate at Julian Field. |
Yes, it gets cold at Julian Field late in the season as the playoffs arrive, but these blankets aren’t for the players. They’re for shelters in the Kansas City area as part of Park’s “Cover Up with the Pirates” women’s soccer program.
Cover Up with the Pirates offers a unique form of admission to 2009 Park women’s soccer home games, with the exception of the Pirates’ Oct. 13 contest with Baker University, which is the Pirates vs. Cancer contest where all gate proceeds will benefit cancer research.
For the remaining nine home contests, fans can bring a blanket to the gate at Julian Field and in return for free admission to that day’s game. At season’s end, Park players and coaches will distribute the blankets to shelters in the Kansas City area.
“This is a great way for our program to get out in the community and do something good for those who need it,” said head coach Ken Hefner. “What makes it better is teaming up with our fans to help others. Our fans are the best around, and we’re asking them to step up and help us give back to the community.”
Park will begin the regular season Aug. 29, when blankets are far from anyone’s mind in the late-summer heat. The contest begins at 1 p.m. at Julian Field, and a week prior to the opener, Pirate fans can catch a glimpse of the 2009 Pirates at Julian Field, with an Aug. 22 exhibition contest scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
