Ashley Maxwell sealed Park's bid to Daytona with the team's fifth score in a penalty kick shootout win over Dordt Saturday.
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Ashley Maxwell converted the fifth and final penalty kick goal in shootout play Saturday, sending Park University past Dordt College in the opening round of the 2008 NAIA Women’s Soccer Tournament in Sioux Center, Iowa. The shootout broke a 1-1 double-overtime tie, sending the Pirates to the NAIA’s final site Dec. 1-6 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Park (14-1-3) trailed at the half, as Dordt (18-1-1) scored in the 37th minute on Lindsay Baker found the net off of a pass from Lindsay Landhuis, giving the Defenders a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates got on the board with six seconds left in the 66th minute when Sophie Chapman found the back of the frame, knotting the game at 1-1 with 23 minutes to play. From there, both defenses took control, as Dordt’s Jenna Noteboom finished the game with two saves in 110 minutes, while Megan Stoiber kept the Park posts with six saves.
After two scoreless 10-minute extra frames, the game went to penalty kicks to decide who would advance to Daytona, and on the first set of shots, Natalie Parker converted while Dordt’s Lexi Elgersma was denied by Monika Stoiber, who entered the game between the pipes for the Pirates in the shoot-out setting.
Chapman made good for the Pirates on the second series while Amanda den Dulk also found the net for the Defenders, and in the third series, Kate Du Mez scored for Dordt while Dena Pires made good for Park.
On the fourth kick, Katelyn Alderman put one in to begin things for Park and despite Landhuis scoring in Dordt’s fourth attempt, the Pirates sealed their bid to Florida when Maxwell led off the fifth series with a goal, advancing on penalty kicks, 5-3.
Dordt outshot Park 10-6 in the game, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
Park has now qualified for the 2008 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Tournament’s final site, which begins Dec. 1 and ends Dec. 6 with the championship game in Daytona Beach, Fla., at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University’s Embry Riddle Soccer Stadium.
