Pirates Finish 21st at NAIA Women's Golf Championship

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Park University finished its first-ever NAIA Women's Golf National Championship appearance with a team-377 Friday, finishing the 2008 championship in 21st place ahead of Malone and Tennessee Wesleyan.

 

Ashley Nicks led the Pirates, who played the final part of their round in a near-downpour at Lake San Marcos Country Club. Nicks shot 92, followed by Roxanne Jensen's 94 and a 95 from Nicole Wiehe.

 

Allison Vaughn rounded out the team 377 with a 96, while Nicole Ainsworth posted 100 on the tournament's final day.

 

The 21st-place performance rounds out the most prolific season in Park's five-year women's golf history, as the Pirates were crowned MCAC Champions for the second-straight year and for the first time in school history, the Pirates won the Region IV tournament and earned a trip to the national championship.

 

Final results will be made available at www.naia.org at the conclusion of the tournament, along with the announcement of All-Americans and additional tournament awards.

 

ASHLEY NICKS (47-45 - 92)

Nicks rounded out her collegiate career at plus-20, bringing her tournament total to 351. Nicks had bogeys at the opening holes, beginning her round on the back nine before back-to-back pars at No. 13 and No. 14. She birdied the par-5 15th before finishing the nine with a double-bogey five at No. 17 and a triple-bogey at the 18th. Nicks made par at both No. 1 and No. 2, finishing her round with a par at the ninth.

 

NICOLE WIEHE (47-48 - 95)

Wiehe rallied from a double-bogey to start her round with a par at No. 11, later making par at No. 16 to go out in 48. She went without a par on the front side, making six bogeys and three doubles on the second nine to finish with 95, pushing her tournament total to 367.

 

NICOLE AINSWORTH (50-50 - 100)

Ainsworth shot 100 to bring her first-career national tournament to a close with a final score of 394. Ainsworth began the day with back-to-back pars before making eight at No. 12, but she rallied for par at the 13th before finishing the nine in 50. She also fired 50 on the front nine, recording one par at the par-3 sixth.

 

ALLISON VAUGHN (49-47 - 96)

Vaughn started the day with a par at No. 10 and again made par at No. 13 and No. 16, closing the first nine in 47. She then made par at No. 5 and at No. 9 to close the day at 96, moving her four-day total to 380.

 

ROXANNE JENSEN (47-47 - 94)

Jensen made par at No. 11 and again at No. 14, going out in 47 before turning with a pair of bogeys at No. 1 and No. 2, followed by back-to-back doubles at No. 3 and No. 4. She recovered to par No. 8 and finished with bogey five at No. 9. Jensen's front-nine 47 ran her final-round total to 94, pushing her four-day count to 378.
