SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Allison Vaughn fired her second-career sub-90 round to record back-to-back rounds in the 80s, but Park University struggled as a team on the third day of the 2008 NAIA National Tournament at Lake San Marcos Country Club in San Marcos, Calif.
Ashley Nicks posted Park's second-best score at 90, and the Pirates counted 96 from Roxanne Jensen and 97 from Nicole Wiehe to end the day with a count-four team total of 372.
Park remained ahead of playing partners Tennessee Wesleyan and Malone, despite scoring two strokes behind Malone on the tournament's first day. The Pirates opened the day on the back nine and turned to the front side to complete the round
Complete results will be made available later Thursday evening upon the conclusion of the tournament's third day.
ASHELY NICKS
Nicks went out in 43, making par at the par-4 14th before making a birdie two at No. 17, but a ball out of bounds at No. 18 resulted in a triple-bogey eight, pushing the senior to plus-6 through nine holes. Nicks bogeyed the first three holes of the second nine before making a nine at the par-4 fourth, but she quickly recovered to par at No. 5, making another par at No. 8 before finishing with a double bogey at the ninth to shoot 90.
NICOLE WIEHE
Wiehe opened the round with a par at No. 10, but back-to-back double bogeys at No. 12 and No. 13 helped push her first-nine score to 49, and on the front side, Wiehe went without a par, making six bogeys for a front-nine 48, finishing the day in 97 strokes.
NICOLE AINSWORTH
Ainsworth started the day with a par at No. 10, but back-to-back struggles at No. 11 and No. 12 preceded consecutive pars at No. 13 and No. 14, leaving Ainsworth at plus-9 through the round's first five holes. She finished the first nine in 14-over 51, and on the front side, she went without a par to shoot 53, finishing in 104.
ALLISON VAUGHN
Vaughn's second-straight sub-90 round and the second in her collegiate career began on a sour note with an eight at the opening hole, but back-to-back pars at No. 13 and No. 14 helped boost the freshman to a first-nine 47 that also included a par-3 at the 17th. On the front nine, Vaughn made par at No. 1 and No. 4 before knocking in a birdie two at the par-3 sixth. She ended the nine with a 7-over 42 to shoot 89 on the day.
ROXANNE JENSEN
Jensen went out in 47 on the back nine, making pars at No. 13 and No. 15, and on the front nine, she went without a par and finished with three-straight sixes to finish the front side in 49, moving her round total to 96 on the day. Jensen made nine bogeys in the tournament's third round.
