Vaughn's 19-Shot Bounceback Sparks Park to Team 354 on Day 2

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Allison Vaughn improved her second-round score by 19 strokes over her day-one total, firing an 88 to go with an 87 from Nicole Wiehe and a team-best 85 from Ashley Nicks, keeping the Pirates in 21st at the 2008 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship at Lake San Marcos Country Club in San Diego.

Park's two-day 712 team score is 11 strokes better than 22nd-place Tennessee Wesleyan and 13 ahead of Malone, while British Columbia leads the tournament by three strokes, putting together a count-four 630 to stay ahead of Embry Riddle and Oklahoma City, both at 633.

Tournament host Cal State-San Marcos is in fourth at 637.

The Pirates are back in action at the national tournament on Thursday morning, drawing the first tee times of the day, with Roxanne Jensen leading off for the third time in the tournament at 7:30 a.m.

Park is paired with Tennessee Wesleyan and Malone.

ROXANNE JENSEN (51-47 - 98)

Jensen began the day's first three holes on a hot streak, making par at the first, followed by a bogey at No. 2 and a second par a the par-3 third. She found trouble on the next four holes, though, before recovering for a par at No. 8 and a bogey to finish the front nine.

Jensen then posted double bogeys at 10 and 12 between bogey fours at the par-3 11th and 13th, but at No. 14, Jensen made a par-4, followed by a par-5 at the 15th.

She then made bogey at 16 and par on 17 before closing with a triple-bogey at No. 18 to finish with a back-nine 47.

ALLISON VAUGHN (43-45 - 88)

After nearly losing her opening drive out of bounds on day two, Vaughn tracked down one of the top turnarounds in NAIA Women's Golf Tournament history, improving her second round total 19 strokes from her day-one total, firing an 88 on the tournament's second day.

Vaughn began the day 4-over after a double and a bogey to open the round, followed by another bogey at the par-3 third. The day would turn in her favor, though, at the fourth, where she made a two-putt par, followed by a chip-in par at No. 5.

She later made par at eight and bogey at nine to go out in 43 strokes.

Vaughn was unable to make a par on the back nine, making six bogeys and a double before reaching the 17th tee, where she jammed her tee shot to within 10 feet and drained the putt for her first birdie of the day. She then bogeyed the par-5 18th, capping the top round of her young collegiate career with a back-nine 45 to total 88 for the day.

NICOLE AINSWORTH (48-46 - 94)

Ainsworth made three bogeys and a par to begin her round before an eight at the fourth, but she quickly recovered for a par-3 at sixth to begin the first third of the round in plus-7.

Ainsworth doubled the par-5 seventh, but stepped to the eighth tee feeling fortunate after nearly losing her tee shot out of bounds, only to strike a standing object in outside territory, bounding the ball back into play.

She made bogey at nine to go out in 48 before making a pair of double bogeys to begin her back-nine stretch. A par at the par-3 13th settled her back nine a bit, and a second par-3 at 17 set up Ainsworth's best hole of the tournament, as the sophomore made a birdie four at the par-5 18th, which played into the wind during Wednesday's round.

NICOLE WIEHE (45-42 - 87)

Wiehe made three front-nine pars and three more bogeys, but a pair of doubles and a triple at the par-5 seventh put the sophomore out in 45 strokes to begin the tournament's second day.

She turned with a par at 10 and made a second par at the par-3 13th, setting up her first tournament birdie, a three at the par-4 14th.

Wiehe would bogey out for a back-nine 42, finishing the day with a second-straight round in the 80s, firing 87 for the Pirates' second-best score of the tournament's second day.

ASHLEY NICKS (41-44 - 85)

Nicks started the day with a par at No. 1, followed by back-to-back bogeys and a second par at No. 4.

She stumbled a bit at the fifth, making double bogey, but the Pirates' lone competing senior rebounded, making a birdie two at the par-3 sixth and a par at No. 7, the front nine's only par-5.

Nicks turned to make pars at both the 10th and 11th, followed by a bogey at 12 and two more pars at No. 13 and No. 14.

Another par at 16 followed a double-bogey on the 15th, and Nicks made her first triple bogey of the tournament at 17, making the first of back-to-back sixes to finish the back nine in 44 for a round total of 85.
