Pirates Fire Opening Round 358 at NAIA Women's Golf National Championship

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Park University fired a count-four team score of 358 Tuesday at Lake San Marcos Country Club in the opening round of the 2008 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship in San Marcos, Calif.

Ashley Nicks topped Park's team count by rebounding from a first-nine 44 with a front-nine 40, while Nicole Wiehe also improved in her second nine holes, going out in 45 before finishing in 43.

The Pirates started the day on No. 10, playing the back nine prior to making the turn to the front side of the golf course.

Roxanne Jensen added a 90 to the team score by following her back-nine 46 with a front-nine 44, and Nicole Ainsworth used a first-nine 46 to arrive at 96 and the fourth score in the count-four total.

Allison Vaughn shot 107 on the tournament's opening day, rebounding from a shaky first nine holes with a front-nine 47.

Play continues in the tournament Wednesday, as Park gets its day started in the afternoon beginning with a 12:50 tee time for Jensen, followed by a 1 p.m. start for Vaughn, a 1:10 time for Ainsworth and a 1:20 tee time for Wiehe.

Nicks rounds out Park's day on Wednesday, getting her round started at 1:30. Round-by-round recaps are listed below for all five Pirates competing in the championship.

ROXANNE JENSEN (46-44 - 90)

Jensen used a stretch of three-straight pars on the back nine's middle three holes to fend off a rocky start, getting through the first six holes of her round in 5-over par.

Jensen would finish the back nine with two bogeys and a double-bogey to shoot 46 in her first nine holes of the tournament, and Jensen turned to the front side with a second-straight bogey, followed by a double another bogey to move to plus-13.

She then made par at the 349-yard par-4 fourth, followed by five-straight bogeys to finish the round at 18-over-par, 90.

ALLISON VAUGHN (60-47 - 107)

Vaughn made a remarkable recovery on her second nine holes, making par at the 375-yard par-4 second, adding to it five bogeys to finish the front nine in 12-over, 47.

Vaughn opened her day with a rough start but rallied back to make a par at the 175-yard par-3 17th, to bring the first nine to a close.

NICOLE AINSWORTH (46-50 - 96)

Ainsworth made par on four of her first five holes, mixing in a double-bogey at the 12th to complete the first five holes of her round in 2-over par.

Ainsworth slipped at the par-5 15th and after a bogey at the 16th, she was 8-over. She then made par at 17 and bogey at 18 to complete a first-nine 46, and on the front side, she started the second nine with three-straight bogeys.

Another slip at the par-4 fourth would move Ainsworth to 18-over par, but she rallied to par the fifth by making four on the 343 par-4.

NICOLE WIEHE (45-43 - 88)

Wiehe opened the round 5-over through the first four holes before making par at the next two, recording four at the par-4 14th and five at the 466-yard No. 15, and the sophomore finished her first nine holes with three bogeys to finish 8-over, 45.

On the front nine, Wiehe opened with a par at No. 1, followed by two more pars on No. 6 and No. 9 to end with a 43 to total 88.

Wiehe made three-straight bogeys between the second and fourth holes, added to doubles at No. 5 and No. 7.

ASHLEY NICKS (44-40 - 84)

Nicks had a slippery start to her back nine, making bogey at the par-5 10th, recovering for a pair of pars at 11 and 12 before a double bogey that preceded four-straight bogeys before the 18th tee.

Nicks made par at No. 18, making five at the 480-yard par-5, and she made a second-straight par at No. 1, making four at the 338-yard opening hole.

Nicks made another par at No. 3, followed by back-to-back pars at five and six, and the lone Pirate senior in the tournament finished her opening round with three-straight bogeys to close the nine in 40, completing her opening-round score at 84.
