Members of the Park University women's basketball team spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon volunteering at the 3rd Annual Bill Cross 5K Walk/Fun Run for BackSnack in Zona Rosa.
"This was a perfect chance for our kids to get involved and give back to such a worthy cause," head coach Kenneth Cooper said. "I know our players had a great time out there and enjoyed the experience."
The student-athletes spent most of the day working with the children's race (0.5K) helping the kids through a proper warm-up prior to the race with a series of stretching exercises. The Pirates also ran/walked with the participants providing encouragement throughout the race.
"I am pleased with how our ladies interacted with the Parkville community members," Cooper added. "They represented the Park women's basketball program exceptionally well and gave us some good exposure."
Two year ago, the Northland Childhood Hunger Initiative Fund and Harvesters partnered to expand the BackSnack program, a backpack filled with nutritious, child-friendly food for these children to take home at the end of the week. The run is in memory of Bill Cross, former Mayor of Gladstone and a teacher, coach, administrator, mentor and role model for more than 35,000 area students.
