Kansas City, Mo. – Head Coach Joe C. Meriweather and his entire 16 member women’s basketball team volunteered their time last week at the Clay Johnson Foundation basketball clinic at the College Basketball Experience in downtown Kansas City, Mo.
Park head coach Joe C. Meriweather and his women's basketball squad will begin the 09-10 season with an exhibition game this Sat. at 1:00 p.m.
Clay Johnson was a member of the 1982 NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers and played collegiately at the University of Missouri. Johnson, who lives in the Kansas City area, is a good friend of Coach Meriweather and organizes a basketball clinic for more than 175 inner city kids each year.
“We had a great time out at the clinic last week,” Meriweather said. “It’s always great to help out a friend like Clay and it’s always good to give our girls a chance to bond as a team and help out some kids that don’t get many opportunities like this very often.”
Park assistant coach Stephen Gray and former Pirate All-American and son of Coach Meriweather, Jon Meriweather helped volunteer as well.
The camp featured dozens of different stations geared at teaching the youngsters the fundamentals of the game and taught them the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork.
“We have a lot of local players and it was great for them to give back to their community her in KC,” Meriweather said.
Park will open up competition this Saturday as they take on Livin the Dream in an exhibition game at 1:00 p.m. inside the Breckon Sports Center.
Livin’ The Dream consists of one men’s and one women’s traveling exhibition team comprised of former college and professional athletes that compete against top NCAA, NAIA, Junior College and International competition.
