ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Park University’s Brianne Edwards and Meghan Cummings were named to the 2009 A.I.I. All-Independent Team Friday, which was announced during the quarterfinal round of the 2009 A.I.I. Tournament at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C.
Sophomore Brianne Edwards was named to the 2009 A.I.I. All-Independent First Team after averaging 13.9 points per game in the 2008-09 season.
Edwards, a sophomore from Warrensburg, Mo., was named to the All-A.I.I. First Team, which was headed by Brescia University’s Brittany Bird, who was named A.I.I. Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
Edwards was Park’s leading scorer throughout the 2008-09 season, averaging 13.9 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per contest, which ranked second for the Pirates this season. She started in all 27 games for Park, averaging 34 minutes per start and hitting 36.1-percent of her shots from the floor, which ranked fifth in the A.I.I. Her scoring average also ranked in the A.I.I., making Edwards the fourth-best scorer in the group.
The honor was the second from the A.I.I. for Edwards, who was named to last season’s All-Tournament team in Orangeburg.
Cummings ended her career on the A.I.I.’s second team after averaging 10.8 points per game this season. Cummings played in 23 games for the Pirates, starting in all 23, and she scored 248 points to push her career-scoring total to 1,061 after eclipsing the 1,000-point mark earlier this season.
A native of Joplin, Mo., Cummings also hit the 700-rebound plateau earlier this year and was Park’s leader on the glass throughout the season, averaging 7.6 rebounds per game, ranking fourth among all A.I.I. Division I players.
Edwards was joined on the first team by Morris College’s Tyneshia Eaddy, Lambuth’s Yolanda Johnson, Rhadja Page and Courtney Milhouse, who both play for Voorhees College.
The second team included Brescia’s Christal Floyd and Paula Carver, Lambuth’s CT Kintchen and Donna Lavea, and Staci Holmes from Morris. Shaniqua Campbell of Morris College also received A.I.I. recognition after being named Freshman of the Year.
Park University ended its season in the A.I.I. Quarterfinals, falling Friday afternoon to Morris, 76-67, at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg.
