Deron Cherry II

#23 | 6-3, 190, Sr., Guard | Kansas City, Mo. (UMKC)

2007-08 – Came on late in his junior season to make six starts while playing in 13 games...Was named to the All-Independent Region team and was a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete as well as All-Academic All-Independent Region...Registered his first collegiate points on Nov. 19, scoring four against John Brown...Saw his first significant action of the season on Jan. 16, helping the Pirates to a win over Rockhurst with four 3-point baskets and 19 points, beginning a streak of six double-figure scoring games...Made his first start on Feb. 8 against Allen, and remained in the starting five through the remainder of the season...Established a career high for points on Feb. 26 with 31 against Philander Smith, wehre he was 6-of-11 from beyond the 3-point arc in helping the Pirates to a 90-64 win...Finished the season averaging 11.9 points and was 28-of-71 (.394) from beyond the 3-point stripe...Was also a 66-percent free throw shooter and 47-percent from the floor (54-of-116)...Averaged 3.4 rebounds per game...PERSONAL – Deron Cherry II is the son of Deron Cherry and Faith Cherry of Kansas City, Mo….Father was a six-time Pro Bowl safety with the Kansas City Chiefs, playing 11 years in the NFL, recording 50 interceptions and one touchdown and is now a business owner…Did not play high school basketball but was a stand-out golfer at Rockhurst High School before attending UMKC...High school golf coach was Michael O’Leary...Was a high school classmate of Tony Temple, who played three seasons at running back for Missouri before signing a free-agent contract with the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2008 football season...Cherry enjoys video games in spare time and chose Park to pursue his degree and for a chance to play basketball.
