PARKVILLE, Mo. – For the second straight day, the Park University men’s volleyball team defeated Johnson and Wales (Colo.) to improve its overall record to 12-4 and 9-1 in the MAMVIC West.
Fray Arteaga was named this week's NAIA Player of the Week.
The Pirates took down, JWU in four sets, 28-30, 30-27, 24-30, 30-26, 15-10. Park had to storm back after the set one defeat, to win game two by three.
JWU controlled game three from the start, but the Pirates weren’t rattled with the home crowd behind them winning game four by four points.
In game five the Pirates took it to the Wildcats, winning by five. Four Pirates had double-digit kills, as Fray Luis Fajardo Arteaga led all players on the floor with 17 kills.
Erick Albuquerque had 15 kills, and Zach Penolio also posted 15. Middle blocker, Oskar Soderlund slammed home 10 kills as well for Park.
JWU had 12 team blocks, compared to Park’s 5.5 and the match featured 48 tied scores and 20 lead changes.
Phillip Heckmann led the Pirates with 41 assists, while Mike Sauro led the Wildcats in assists with 50.
Heckmann and Beau Barnthson had the most service aces of any Pirate with three, the Wildcats only had one service ace on the day, that coming from Chris Schardt.
In NAIA news, Arteaga was named this week’s NAIA Player of the Week. The 6-3 outside hitter led the Pirates to wins over Hannibal-LaGrange and Missouri Baptist and averaged 4.15 kills per game for a .356 kill percentage.
