PARKVILLE, Mo. – The No. 4 ranked Park University men’s volleyball team will look to bounce back after a tough conference loss earlier this week, as they host Hannibal-LaGrange College this Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:00 p.m. and Missouri Baptist University this Saturday, Feb. 27 at 12:00 p.m.
Beau Barnthson and the Pirates will take on two MAMVIC West opponents at home this weekend.
The Pirates dropped a thrilling five game match to fellow MAMVIC West opponent Missouri Valley last Tuesday evening at the Breckon Sports Center for their first conference loss of the season.
Park is now 8-4 on the year and 5-1 in the conference, while Hannibal-LaGrange comes into Parkville with a 6-9 overall record and 1-6 MAMVIC West record. Missouri Baptist and Park met back on Feb. 20 on Mo Bap’s campus, the Pirates prevailed in a 3-0 victory. MBU is 7-7 on the year and 3-2 in MAMVIC West action.
The Pirates are averaging 14.13 kills per game this season and Fray Luis Arteaga has continually led Park in kills all season long.
Arteaga has a team high 161 kills on the year, and averages 4.03 per game. Zach Penolio is second on the team in kills with 133 and 3.17 per game.
Park’s leader in service aces this season is sophomore setter Philip Heckmann. The Schuettorf, Germany native has 17 service aces this season and is second on the team in assists with 57.
Park’s starting setter, Felix Horn has an astounding, 544 assists on the year. He had all of Park’s assists but one in the loss against Mo Valley, collecting 65 of the Pirates 66 assists.
Hannibal-LaGrange has many players with over 100 kills this season including Matheus Roham, who leads the Trojans in kills with 190. Jake Wollenberg has 150 kills, while Breno Bianchetti has 101 and Tom Burke has 100 on the year.
The Trojans have lost four straight matches and picked up its only conference win of the year back on January 26 against Graceland.
Missouri Baptist is ranked No. 7 in the country and picked up a huge victory early on in the season, upsetting the No. 1 team in the country California Baptist, in three sets back on Jan. 28.
Horn Wins NAIA Setter of the Week for Second Time
For the second time this season, Park’s freshman setter Felix Horn was named the NAIA Setter of the Week for his brilliant play over the weekend.
Horn led Park to a 2-1 record last week defeating Missouri Baptist and Fontbonne University and losing in three games to Clarke College.
The freshman out of Biberg, Germany, averaged 10.6 assists per game and 1.67 digs per game for the week. Horn is the team leader in assists this season with 479 and averages 12.28 assists per game.
Horn is tied for second on the team in service aces with 13 and second on the squad in digs with 76. He is also among the team leaders in blocks with 27.
