Missouri Valley Upsets Park in Thrilling Five Game Match

BOX SCORE

Vini Baigan had 10 digs against his former team on Tuesday night.
PARKVILLE, Mo. – After a hard fought MAMVIC West match, Missouri Valley College upset No. 4 ranked Park University on its home floor in five games (33-31, 26-30, 23-30, 30-26, 15-11).

Park fell to 8-4 on the year and its perfect MAMVIC West record has been spoiled, as the Pirates now sit at 5-1 in the conference.

Mo Valley improves to 8-7 on the year and 3-3 in MAMVIC West play. The Vikings came to play beginning in the first game when they took game one, 33-31. Josh DeLeon who has led the Vikings in kills all season long, had a team high 21 kills and a stellar .350 hitting percentage.

Park responded by taking game two, 30-26, and game three, 30-23. In front of a packed Breckon Sports Center, Fray Luis Fajardo Arteaga led all players with 24 kills and pumped up the crowd throughout the night.

Zach Penolio provided the Pirates with 16 strong kills and two other Pirates had over double digit kills as, Erick Albuquerque posted 13 and the older brother Jake Penolio had 10.

The Pirates and Vikings have split the two game series so far this season, as the Pirates defeated MVC, in four games back on Feb. 2 in Marshall, Mo. The two teams will not compete again until the MAMVIC West Conference tournament in Denver, Colo. On April 9-10.

Despite the loss in five games, the Pirates dominated Missouri Valley in total team blocks with 19.5, compared to the Vikings seven.

Park’s NAIA Setter of the Week, Felix Horn was in total control of the game on Tuesday night, picking up 65 of Park’s 66 assists and 13 digs.

Park will now have four more games at home in the next week, as they take on Hannibal-LaGrange this Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Missouri Baptist this Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. at the Breckon Sports Center.
