Volleyball Set for Three Matches in Two Days

GAME NOTES (PDF)

Jake Penolio and the Pirates have won four straight matches.
PARKVILLE, Mo. –
Park University will look to continue its four match winning streak this weekend as they take on three teams in two days starting with Clarke College this Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m. on the campus of Missouri Baptist University.

The Pirates will also take on Missouri Baptist on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at Mo Bap and NCAA Division III Fontbonne University also on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo. on Fontbonne’s campus.

The Pirates will take on MAMVIC East foe Clarke College first this weekend. Clarke is 10-2 on the year and have won two straight matches. The Crusaders swept No. 7 ranked Cardinal Stritch on Valentines Day and swept Milwaukee School of Engineers back on Feb. 13.

Clarke also lost in four games to No. 1 California Baptist and slipped up against Missouri Valley, losing to the Vikings in four games back on Feb. 6

Clarke has three big outside hitters in Alex Wilharm, Travis Gabehart and Alex Kelsheimer, all of whom have more than 100 kills on the year.

Wilharm leads the team with 165 kills, while Gabehart has 114 and Kelsheimer has 106. Clark’s setter, Matt Redman also leads the MAMVIC East in assists with 499 and Dan Tringale leads the team and conference in digs with 124.

Park will face fellow MAMVIC West opponent Missouri Baptist next up this weekend on Saturday at noon. Mo Bap is 6-5 on the year, but shocked the men’s volleyball world back on Jan. 28, when they defeated No. 1 ranked California Baptist in three straight sets at home. They also went five games with then No. 3 ranked Cardinal Stritch, eventually losing to the Wolves.

Park swept the Spartans in both matches in 2009, defeating MBU in five games on the road and sweeping Mo Bap at home.

The Pirates will finish up the weekend facing Fontbonne who is 1-3 on the year. The Griffins defeated Mount St. Joseph on Feb. 5 for its only win of the season.

Park has played outstanding in its last five games, defeating Cardinal Stritch, Missouri Valley, Graceland and Lindenwood along the way.

Park is 6-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in MAMVIC West action. Fray Luis Fajardo Arteaga and Zach Penolio both have over 100 kills for the Pirates this season. Arteaga leads the team with 114, while Penolio has 104.

Last’s week’s NAIA Setter of the Week, Felix Horn, leads the conference in assists with 383 and junior Jake Penolio is second on the team in blocks with 25.

After this three game road stretch the Pirates will return home for five straight home matches starting with Missouri Valley on Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Breckon Sports Center.
