PARKVILLE, Mo. - After going 2-2 in the Lindenwood Tournament last week against some of the top men’s volleyball programs in the country, Park University will return to MAMVIC West play this Tuesday, Feb. 2 against Missouri Valley on the road at 7:00 p.m.
Freshman Felix Horn leads the Pirates with 252 assists.
Park defeated No. 2 Hope International and No. 3 ranked Cardinal Stritch over the weekend in St. Charles, Mo., but dropped matches to No. 1 California Baptist and St. Ambrose to bring their overall record to 3-2.
Park’s match against Cardinal Stritch was an instant classic, as the Pirates trailed two games to zero and fought back to win the final three games and clinch the victory over the No. 3 ranked Wolves.
Fray Luis Fajardo Arteaga had a phenomenal match for Park against Cardinal Stritch, knocking down 27 kills and had a hitting percentage of .561. He also had two service aces and 13 digs in the match.
Freshman Felix Horn also played outstanding against the Wolves, registering 69 assists and had five kills on five attempts.
The Pirates match with Hope International went four games with the Pirates winning games two, 34-32, three, 30-22, and game four 30-27.
Four Pirates had 10 or more kills against the Royals, as freshman Zach Penolio highlighted the group with 18 kills and hit a stifling .341.
Junior Erick Albuquerque also had 15 kills, along with freshman Luis Zepeda who had 12 and freshman Wilfredo Lopez added 11.
Horn leads those Pirates with at least 10 kills this year in hitting percentage at .529, but Lopez is not far behind with his percentage of .456 on 33 kills.
Arteaga leads all Pirates in kills with 71, while Zach Penolio only trails him by three with his 68 kills.
Jake Penolio have split time together at the middle blocking position and both have performed quite well in Park’s first five matches. Both have a team high 20 blocks and Penolio has appeared in one more game than Lopez, as he has seen the floor in 22 games, which is also a team high.
Missouri Valley comes into the match with a record of 0-2, losing to Missouri Baptist and Lindenwood earlier in the year. Both matches ended in three games.
NOTES ON PARK...
- As a tem Park now has exactly 300 kills, averaging 13.64 per game. The Pirates also feature a .282 hitting percentage.
- Sophomore setter Philip Heckmann leads Park in service aces with 10.
- 11 players have seen the floor so far for Park this season. Zach Penolio, Jake Penolio and Erick Albuquerque lead the team in games played with 22.
