PARKVILLE, Mo. - Park (18-1, 4-0 MAMVIC) added one more win to its record after defeating JWU (9-4, 4-2) for the second time this weekend 3-0 (30-25, 30-18, 30-20). Lance Pulliam paced the Pirate offense with 14 kills while Nebojsa Janovic led the defense with 16 digs and J.P. da Silva finished with 45 assists.
Despite an early hitting error from Dragomir Katanic on the first play, Park rallied back and took the lead on a double block by J.P. da Silva and Bosko Novovic, 3-2.
Additional errors and strong plays from the Wildcats kept the game interesting before the Pirates took charge with a 4-0 run that ended on a Ryan Stafford kill making it 11-7.
The Wildcats kept their momentum with Ty Schraufnagel behind the service line who brought them within two points behind the Pirates, 14-12. But that's as close as they got before another kill from Stafford put the Pirates up 17-13.
Up 22-14, the JWU frontline put a stop to the Park offense with a block assist from Curtis Oliver and Nathan LaHanes who used that momentum to go 22-16 before the Pirates made another stop by a Pulliam kill. A few plays later, a da Silva kill at the net brought the Pirates within 4 points of game one, 26-20.
After long rallies back and forth over the net, and two more kills from Stafford the Pirates took a victory in game one as the Pirates won 30-25.
Game two started much like the first with errors on both ends, but a block solo from Novovic put the Pirates ahead 3-1. The Wildcats didn't give up as they used an ace by Oliver to draw them within two, 7-5.
The long rallies continued before Pulliam capitalized on an open net to take the kill and increase the Pirate lead 11-7. Oliver again had an answer as he got a kill of his own and made it 13-9. Teammate Schraufnagel carried the energy into the next play as he had a block solo and put the Wildcats into double-digits and within three, 13-10.
The Pirates again made another run for the game before a double block from Cody Dunston and LaHanes stopped them at 18-12. However, the Pirates didn't stop and continued with a 3-0 run that forced a JWU time-out at 21-12.
Two Pirate back-to-back errors gave the Wildcats energy that Pulliam wasn't going to accept as he fired back with a kill from da Silva and put the Pirates back on track 23-14.
Despite a few hitting errors on the next few plays from the Pirates, a Katanic kill kept the Pirates alive as they kept the lead 27-17. A da Silva kill gave the Pirates game point again, but miscommunication caused the ball to go right back to the Wildcats.
Again, the Pirates were forced to use the service reception to finish the game and they did on a kill from Henry Uribe.
Uribe carried his power into game three as he killed the ball down the line to take a 1-0 lead. The game went point for point as he had throughout the previous two games before two Wildcat errors put Park up 7-4.
The Pirates didn't break the momentum as they used a Pulliam service ace to put them into double digits, 10-5. Back to back kills from Stafford and da Silva kept them ahead 13-9 before a double block across the net by Dunston and Benjamin Davies ended the Pirates' run.
The Wildcats continued fighting back as LaHanes took advantage of a Pirate overpass and killed the ball in center court making the score 15-13. It didn't get any closer as Katanic gave back to back kills for the Pirates keeping them ahead 17-14.
The Pirates gained sole possession of the momentum as a kill from Uribe and block assist from Stafford and Novovic forced a JWU timeout at 20-15.
The Pirates took a 6-2 run over the next few plays to inch towards another victory with back to back kills from Pulliam at 28-17. The Wildcats answered with two kills of their own before a LaHanes error gave the Pirates game point.
Park returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Graceland at 7 p.m.
