DAVENPORT, Iowa - No. 2 Park needed the maximum five games plus a few extra serves Saturday, beating No. 6 St. Ambrose 3-2 (37-35, 34-32, 25-30, 28-30, 15-10) in Davenport, Iowa.
The Pirates (1-0) led 2-0 early in the match, but SAU (0-1) rallied for wins in games three and four to force a fifth and decisive frame.
Park opened the match with a win in game one, but the Pirates were forced to go seven points past 30 to win, beating the Bees 37-35 in the opening game. Park needed four extra points in game two, going up two games with a 34-32 triumph.
St. Ambrose avoided the sweep in game three, winning by five, 30-25, and the Bees put themselves in a position to win a game later, getting a two-point victory by a 30-28 count to force a fifth game.
Park took control, however, in game five, winning the season opener with a 15-10 advantage in the final game to earn the win.
The Pirates are back on the road in the Hawkeye State Sunday, with first serve at Clarke College scheduled for 1 p.m.
