Melvin Gatson 2010-11 – Made his mark on the 2010-11 season in the AMC tournament, scoring 13 points – all down the stretch in the second half – in the team’s two-point semifinal win at Columbia College, followed by a 14-point performance in the championship win at McKendree…Went 5-for-6 in the final two games of the AMC tournament and hit 16 threes, in all, going 52-of-115 from the floor (.452)…Had six double-digit scoring games and established his career-high with 14 points against MidAmerica Nazarene, finishing the year averaging 5.7 points per contest…Was a 75.4-percent free-throw shooter, knocking down 52 foul shots in 69 attempts…Averaged 1.6 rebounds, passed out 50 assists and had 22 steals. PERSONAL – Melvin Wayne Gatson was born in Kansas City, Kan., and attended Sumner Academy of Arts and Sciences, where he played basketball for head coach Randy Springs…Helped the team to a second-place finish as a senior in 2006-07, and a third-place finish in 2005-06 in Kansas Class 4A…Was an all-league honoree and a Class 4A honorable mention all-state performer…High school teammate, Maurice Holiday, went on to play at Toledo, and shares his high school alma mater with Jeff Hawkins, a two-year player at the University of Kansas…Went on to play at Kansas City Kansas Community College where he was a team captain for head coach Jon Oler, helping the team turn a 10-21 record in 2008-09 into a 21-10 record in 2009-10, averaging 10.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game…Had 26 points against defending national champion Johnson County as a sophomore and also had 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists against Labette County…In an AAU game, hit 13 shots from outside the 3-point arc and collected 62 points in the same game…Chose Park for its basketball program and a chance to contribute to the team…Also recruited by Missouri Western, Texas-Permian Basin and Southwest Baptist…Will major in accounting. |
