LAMONI, Iowa - Park University men's soccer yielded a pair of goals in the second half to see a one-goal lead slip away and dropped a 3-2 decision at Graceland University on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (1-1-0) had both Juan Carlos Salazar (JR/Bogota, Colombia) and Isaias De La Torre (SR/Dodge City, Kan.) score for the second-straight game to climb out of a 1-0 deficit. However, the Yellowjackets (1-1-1) scored just 13 seconds after the De La Torre goal and took the lead for good with just over 10 minutes to play.
Graceland got on the board just before the half hour mark on a goal by Abraham De Anda. Park would respond in the 34th minute when Salazar converted a feed from Jediah Thomas (SR/Boynton Beach, Fla.) for his second goal in as many games.
The teams went to the break level at 1-1, but the Pirates claimed their first lead of the game in the 53rd minute. Joao Moreira (FR/Niteroi, Brazil) and Adeeb Qaisi (JR/Hebron, Palestine) were credited with assists on the De La Torre goal to push Park into a 2-1 lead.
The advantage would not survive the 53rd minute as Graceland equalized at 52:52 on a goal by Joachim Kikuni. The deciding goal came at 78:10 from Jorge Morales Reyes, and a late shot by Qaisi was off target in what proved to be the final opportunity of the match.
Thalu Masindi (JR/London, England) recorded four saves in goal for the Pirates, who were outshot by a 16-12 count, but managed eight of its 12 shots on target. Dylan Deason tallied six saves for Graceland, all in the first half.
Park returns home on Wednesday, September 6 to host Friends University in a non-conference clash at Julian Field with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
