The Pirates’ Katie Carr hit her first homerun of the season in game two in the win over the Lynx.
BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Park University softball team traveled to Belleville, Illinois, to take on Lindenwood University-Belleville in an American Midwest Conference doubleheader. The Pirates (18-15, 13-7 AMC) split with the Lynx (33-14, 15-7 AMC) in the doubleheader. The Lynx won game one 1-0, while the Pirates won game two 10-1 in five innings.
In game one, the first two innings were pitching duel between Shelby Bendure and the Lynx' Taylor Winn. In the bottom of the third inning, the Lynx' Paige Kuefler hit a homerun on a 2-1 count. Kuefler scored the lone run of the game.
Sarah Rothe had hits in the game, while her teammates, Brooke Kunkel, Bendure and Courtney Seymour all had one hit each for the Pirates' offense. The Lynx' offense had a total of four hits in the game.
Bendure got the loss in the circle for the Pirates' defense, pitching 6.0 innings, striking out one batter, giving up four hits and one earned run. Winn got the win in the circle for the Lynx' defense, striking out four batters and giving up five hits.
In the top of the first inning in game two, Bendure hit a double to deep left-center field to bring in Scotling Hurley and Mallory Land. At the end of the inning, the Pirates led the Lynx 2-0. In the top of the second inning, Hurley hit a homerun over the center-field fence on a 1-2 count. She was able to bat in Justice Scales, for the Pirates to extend their lead 4-0 over the Lynx.
In the top of the third inning, three Pirates were walked in. In the bottom of the third inning, the Lynx' Riley Wells hit a single to shallow left-field to knock in Katie Deluka. Park led Lindenwood-Belleville 7-1 heading into the fourth inning. At the top of the fourth inning, Katie Carr hit a homerun on 2-2 count over the center-field fence. Heading into the fifth inning, the Pirates led the Lynx 8-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, Carr hit a single to shallow left-field to bring in Kunkel. Bendure was up to bat for Park; she hit a single to shallow center-field to knock in Land. At the end of the fifth inning, the Pirates led the Lynx 10-1.
Hurley picked up the win in the circle the Pirates' defense, pitching 5.0 innings, striking out five batters, giving up one hits and one earned run. The Lynx' KaitlinGrohman was in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings, striking out three batters, giving up four hits and five earned runs. She got the loss in the circle for the Lynx' defense. Her teammates, Nicole Stull and Trystan Mueller, pitched some for the Lynx' defense in the circle. Stull pitched 2.1 innings, striking out two batters, giving up eight hits and five earned runs, while her teammate, Mueller, pitched 0.1 innings.
The Pirates will be back in action on Tuesday, April 18, at the Park Softball Complex as they host second-ranked Columbia College in an AMC doubleheader. The pitch is set for 2 p.m., with the second game to follow. There will be live stats available through DakStats.
