ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Park University softball team headed to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on St. Louis College of Pharmacy in an American Midwest Conference doubleheader. The Pirates (17-14, 12-6 AMC) swept the Eutectics (2-20, 0-16 AMC) in the doubleheader. Park won game one 19-1 in five innings and game two 17-0 in five innings over STLCOP.
In the top of the first inning in game one, Shelby Bendure hit a homerun on a 1-0 count and knocked in two of her teammates, Mallory Land and Katie Carr. In the bottom of the inning, the Eutectics' Tayler Evans hit a double to left-field to bring in Lydia Braun. Heading into the second inning, the Pirates led the Eutectics 3-1.
In the top of the third inning, Land reached base due to Kate Toler's misplayed grounder, for Scotlin Hurley to score. Carr hit a double to right-field to bring in Brooke Kunkel. After Carr's hit, the Pirates led the Eutectics 5-1. Park went on to score seven more runs in the inning. Heading into the top of the fourth inning, the Pirates led the Eutectics 12-1. The top of the fourth inning, Hailey Costello hit a homerun on a 0-0 count. Costello knocked in Sarah Rothe and Mallory Hughson. The Pirates' offense scored four more runs after Costello's homerun. At the end of the fourth inning, Park led STLCOP 19-1.
Bednure was in the circle for the Pirates' defense, pitching five innings, striking out two batters, giving up four hits and getting the win for Park. The Eutectics' Jessica Kirk was in the circle, striking out two batters, giving up 14 hits and 13 earned runs. She got the loss in the circle for STLCOP.
The top of the first inning in game two, Carr was hit by a pitch and Hurley scored the first run of the game for the Pirates' offense. Two more Park players were walked at the plate, which meant two players walked in for the Pirates. After the two walks, the Pirates led the Eutectics 3-0. Bailey Guiles reach first base due to a fielder's choice play. Carr was able to score off of the previous play. Courtney Seymour was next to bat for the Pirates' offense, hitting a single to center-field and knocking in Rothe. At the end of the first inning, Park led STLCOP 5-0.
In the second inning, the Pirates scored a total of eight runs to lead the Eutectics 13-0. Going into the top of the fourth inning, Costello reach base due to a miss catch on the Eutectics and Land was able to score for the Pirates. Guiles' was next to bat for Park, hitting a single to right-field to bring in Carr. At the end of the inning, Park led STLCOP 15-0. At the top of the fifth inning, Kunkel hit a double to left-field to bring in Hurley. Then, Land hit a single to center-field to bring in Kunkel. Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Pirates led the Eutectics 17-0.
Hurley pitched for the Pirates' defense in the circle, pitching five innings, striking out five batters, giving up three hits and getting the win for Park. The Eutectics' Allison Dewald was in the circle, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up 10 hits and 13 earned runs. Her teammate, Kirk, came in to relieve her for 0.2 innings. Dewald got the loss in the circle for STLCOP.
The Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, April 15, as they head to Belleville, Illinois, to take on Lindenwood University-Belleville in an AMC doubleheader. There will be live stats available through DakStats. The first pitch is set for 12 p.m., with the second game to follow.
