The Pirates’ Brooke Kunkel had three hits against the Lions in game two.
HENDERSON, Tenn. – The No. 23 Park University softball team headed to Henderson, Tennessee, to take on Freed-Hardeman University in an American Midwest Conference doubleheader. The Pirates (3-12, 0-4 AMC) fell to the Lions (7-4, 5-1 AMC) in both games. The Lions won game one 6-0 and won game two 4-3.
In game one, the Lions' Annaka Baxter hit a single to left field to bring in Caitlyn Carter for the first run of the game. Two batters later, Lilly Bombard grounded out but was able to bat in Jenna Graham. The Lions' Kristen Hunsicker hit a double to center field to knock in Baxter and Hannah Wright. After the first inning, the Lions led the Pirates 4-0. At the bottom of the fourth, Makenzie Prince hit a double to deep left field to bring in Abbi Gooch and Carter for the next two runs for the Lions' offense. At the end of the inning, the Pirates trailed the Lions 6-0.
Shelby Bendure was in the circle for the Pirates' defense, pitching a full game, striking out two batters, giving up 12 hits and getting the loss in the circle. Prince was in the circle for the Lions, pitching a full game, striking out four batters, giving up three hits and getting the win in the circle.
In game two, the first two innings was a pitching duel between Scotlin Hurley and Mallory Spurlock. In the bottom of the third, the Lions' Carter hit a triple to deep right field to bring in Gooch. Up to bat next was Graham; she hit a single to right field and batted in Carter. Two batters later, Baxter hit a double to deep center field to bring in Graham. The Lions' Wright hit a single to center field that brought Prince for the last run of the inning. Heading into the top of the fourth, the Lions led the Pirates 4-0.
At the top of the fourth, Katie Carr hit a sacrifice fly to deep right and batted in Brooke Kunkel for Park's first run in the game. Bendure hit a single to shallow left field and batted in Mallory Land. Heading into the bottom of the inning, the Pirates trailed the Lions 4-2. At the top of the seventh, the Pirates' Justice Scales hit a single to shallow right field and batted in Mallory Hughson. After Hughson's run, the Pirates trailed the Lions 4-3.
