The Pirates’ Hailey Costello hit a three-run home run in game two against the Eagles.
WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The No. 23 Park University softball team took on fifth-ranked Williams Baptist College in the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week. The Pirates (3-10, 0-2 AMC) fell to the Eagles (12-6, 5-1 AMC) both games by one run. The Eagles won game one and game two 5-4 over the Pirates.
In game one, the Eagles' Brooke Mason hit a sacrifice bunt squeeze to bring in Madelyn Poe for the first run in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles' Jessica Dobbins was able to score due to an error on the Pirates' defense. At the bottom of the first inning, the Eagles led the Pirates 2-0. In the top of second, Scotlin Hurley hit a single deep in center field to bring in Mallory Hughson. At the end of the inning, the Pirates trailed the Eagles 2-1.
In the top of the third, Hailey Costello hit a single down the left field line to bring in Mallory Land and Shelby Bendure, to give the Pirates the go ahead run. Hurley was able to score off the same play due to the throw. At the end of the inning, the Pirates led the Eagles 4-2. The bottom of the fourth, the Eagles' Alexis Ingram scored due to a bobble on the Pirates. Heading into the top of the fifth, the Pirates led the Eagles 4-3. In the bottom of the inning, Mason hit a single to deep left-center to bring in Dobbins to tie the game up. Two batters later, Molleigh Gray hit a single to shallow right to bring in Mason. The Eagles led the Pirates 5-4 heading into the top of the sixth.
Bendure was in the circle for the Pirates, pitching a full game, giving up nine runs and getting the loss in the circle. The Eagles' Laura Helmich was in the circle, pitching a full game, striking out five batters, giving up eight hits and picking up the win.
In game two, the Eagles' Helmich hit a single shallow down the right field line to bat in Poe. At the end of the first, the Eagles led the Pirates 1-0. At the bottom of the second, Ashley Lyons was hit by a pitch for the Eagles that brought in Tori Johnson. Mason hit a single to center field and was able to bring in Karoline Thomas and Poe. Going into the top of the third, the Eagles led the Pirates 4-0.
At the top of the third inning, Katie Carr hit a double to deep left-center to bring in Land for the Pirates first run of the game. At the end of the inning, the Pirates were down 4-1 to the Eagles. The top of the fifth, Costello hit a three-run home run for the Pirates' offense on a 1-0 count. Costello was able to bring Carr and Sarah Rothe off the bases, to tie the game up 4-4. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Johnson hit a single to deep right to bring in Ingram. At the end of the inning, the Eagles led the Pirates 5-4.
Hurley was in the circle for Park, pitching a full game, striking out two batters, giving up eight hits and got the loss. The Eagles' Rylee Rogers pitched a full game in the circle, striking out three batters, giving up eight hits and four runs. Rogers got the win in the circle for the Eagles' defense.
