ST. LOUIS, Mo. – No. 18 Park University women's soccer team headed to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Missouri Baptist University in an American Midwest Conference Game of the Week. The Pirates (8-2-1, 8-0 AMC) beat the Spartans (7-5, 5-2 AMC) 2-0.
Tuesday's win made Park the first American Midwest Conference team to secure a spot in next month's AMC tournament on campus sites.
"Great conference road win," said Park coach Ken Hefner. "Missouri Baptist University came at us strong and we were able to control them."
In the 29th minute, the Pirates' Isabel Sullivan took a free kick outside the box and found Niamh O'Dea to put the Pirates on the scoreboard. The Pirates led the Spartans 1-0 at the end of the first half. The Pirates outshot the Spartans seven to six, and had five shots on goal out of the seven shots taken in the first half.
In the 76th minute, the Pirates' Sullivan found Emily Key in the box to nail one in the back of the net. The Pirates outshot the Spartans eight to six in the second half, and by the end of the game both teams had a total of seven shots on goal.
Amy Roskell played in the net for the Pirates picking up her third shutout on the season, collecting seven saves in the game. The Spartans' Alexandra Lair played in the made seven saves in a losing effort.
"Great patience and organization today," said Hefner. "Niamh and Emily had two great goals in the game today. The team is really coming together and the future looks very bright."
The Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, October 15, as they host Lindenwood University-Belleville in an AMC game. There will be live stats and live video available at Pirate Sports Network at www.parkathletics.com. The start time is set for 12 p.m., with the men's game to follow.
